Clara Jo Middleton

1929 - 2015

 

Clara Jo Middleton, 86, of Rush, KY, died peacefully Monday morning, July 27th at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.  Clara was born January 8, 1929 in Rush, Kentucky a daughter of the late Everett and Frances Frasure Hamilton.  She was a homemaker and attended Ross Chapel church.  Clara was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Ray Middleton, Sr. in 1020, a grandson, a great grand daughter and 3 sisters. Surviving include a son, Ray Middleton, Jr. of Rush.  Two daughters, Rita Evans of Dayton, Texas,  Kimberly Middleton of Newman, Illinois, and a sister, Juanita Ruggles of Rush.

Graveside services will be held this morning at Hamilton Family Cemetery at 11:00 AM by Brother Keith Crum. Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

 



 

Gordon Fairchild

1946 - 2015

 

Gordon Dell Fairchild, 69, of Westwood, Kentucky, loving husband of Ginny Fairchild, died peacefully on Friday, July 17th in Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.  Gordon was born in Ashland, March 4, 1946 a son of the late Wallace and Thelma Fosson Fairchild.  He was a lifelong resident of Westwood, a member of the Westwood Christian Church, was a retired manager with Tom's Snack's Distributors, and enjoyed many years as a salesman with Westwood Motors.  Gordon never met a stranger and to know him was to love him.  Surviving, in addition to his wife of 38 years, Ginny, include: 3 daughters, Vickie Crawford and husband Matthew of Vanceburg, Kentucky, Shawna Stevens and husband John of South Point, Ohio, Julie Leach of Chesapeake, Ohio.  7 grandchildren, Alex Kulas, Madison and Morgan Stevens, Wyatt Crawford, Adam, Barbara, and Sydney Collins, and a great grandson, Kaiden Blake.  Gordon's family would like to thank the caring staff of Dr. Goebel and Dr. Nelson and the KDMC IV Therapy Department. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 21st at 10:00 AM at Preston Family Funeral Home by Pastor Ed Fairchild.  Burial will be in the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. Visitation is this evening, July 20th, from 6-8 PM.

Janet White

1940 - 2015

 

Janet L. White, 75, of Catlettsburg, KY, wife of Paul White, died Wednesday afternoon at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness. Janet was born April 16, 1940 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Dolver and Evelyn VanHorn Bishop. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a brother, Doug Bishop.  Janet was a former cafeteria manager with the Ashland Public School System and attended the First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg.  Surviving in addition to her husband include, 2 sons, Paul Kevin and Kelley Joe White. A daughter, Barbara Jean Sperry.  2 brothers Gary and Tim Bishop and a sister Lois Lyons.

 

 





Mary Jane Webber




 Mary Jane Webber, 90, of Ashland, Kentucky,  passed away Friday, June 12 in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland.  She was born on May 15, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri.

 She was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Cassaday. She was  proceeded in death by her husband of 49 years, Jack Webber; her daughter, Diana Cyr; her grandson, Jon Cyr; and her sister, Peggy Cassaday. She is survived by her daughters, Mary and Jeff Ware of Ashland, Kentucky, Cathy Webber of New York City, New York, and Mickie and Ron Willis of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren, Chris Ware and Tammy Lyon of Ashland, Kentucky,  Jordan Ware of Ashland, Kentucky, Joe and Dena Cyr of Braselton, Georgia, Mike Cyr of Kailua,Hawaii, and four great grandchildren.

 Mary Jane was a graduate of Kansas City Junior College.  She spent many years as a social worker with the Department of Health and Human Services in Summersville, West Virginia. She had performed as a soloist many times throughout her life, most notably with the Kansas City Orchestra and at the First Church of Christ Scientist in Stamford, Connecticut.  Mary Jane was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, MA. Mary Jane and her husband raised and exhibited champion Alaskan Malamute's for many years in Summersville.  Mary Jane loved listening to opera music.

Fred Fraley

1949 - 2015

 

Fred Fraley, 66, of Ashland, died Monday morning, May 11th at his residence.  Fred was born April 10, 1949 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of Evelyn Fraley of Niceville, Florida and the late George Fraley.  He was retired from the zinc grip lab at AK Steel. He loved life and loved his friends and family.  Surviving include a son, Fred Fraley, Jr. of Ashland, KY.  A brother, Jeff Fraley and wife Paula of Niceville, Florida, and a sister, Terri Humphrey and husband Doug of Aiken, South Carolina.  A memorial service will be this evening (Wednesday) at 7:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Randy Biggs. Henry Clay Smith
1940 - 2015
 Henry Clay Smith, 74, of Westwood, loving husband of Charlotte Thompson Smith, died Tuesday morning, April 28, 2015 in Our Lady Of Bellefonte Hospital following an extended illness.
Henry was born July 18, 1940, a son of the late George Washington and Minnie Ritchie Smith.  He was a welder with the former National Mines Company and was a member of the
Westwood United Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Roy George and William Smith, and 2 sisters, Erma and Elizabeth. Surviving
in addition to his wife include 2 sons, Kevin Smith and wife Cheryl of Worthington, KY, and Keith Smith of Westwood.  2 daughters, Tammy Fannin and husband Mike of Westwood.
Loretta Gronowski and husband Dan of Buffalo, New York.  A brother, Roy Smith of Westwood, 4 sisters, Ruby Hicks of Ashland, Bethany Downard of Piketon, Ohio, Eva Clark of Ashland,
and Minnie Duke of Indiana.  Henry also leaves 7 precious grandchildren. Summer Smith, Bailee Smith, Austin Smith, and 4 serving as pallbearers; Cody Fannin, Chase Fannin, Jensen Smith,
and Daniel Gronowski.  Funeral services will be Friday, May 1st, at 1:00 PM at Westwood United Baptist Church by Elders June Thompson, A.J. Williamson, and Ira Preston. Burial will be

Morris Maynard, Jr.

1971 - 2015

 Morris Maynard, Jr., 44, of Catlettsburg, passed away Monday, April 27th,  at Kings Daughters Medical Center.  Morris was born February 15, 2015 in Boyd County a son of Morris Maynard of Catlettsburg and the late Lisa Hatfield Maynard.  He was a former employee with Pike Utilities. Surviving in addition to his father include 4 sons, Shane Michael Peterman and Zach Peterman of Owingsville, KY. Seth and Jonathan Maynard of Lafalette, Louisiana. Brothers Ruben (Jennifer) Hatfield and Rick (Tonia) Hatfield both of Lafalette, Louisiana.  A special cousin, James Donald Stanley of Worthington, KY and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 2nd at 1:00 PM at Morris's home, 8037 Bayless Hill, Catlettsburg, KY. Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

 




James Michael "Mike" Barber

1939 - 2015

 

James Michael Barber, 76, of Ashland, left us Sunday, April 26, 2015 in Community Hospice Care Center to be with his newfound savior, Jesus Christ, after a sudden illness.  Mike was born the second son of the late Phillip and Helen Enke Barber of Westwood, Kentucky.  He was a 1957 graduate of Ashland High School and was retired from the rigger shop at AK Steel after 37 years. He also served in the 202d National Guard Army Band. After retirement, Mike enjoyed working at River Bend Golf Club and hunting Indian artifacts with his brother Phil.  Mike was known best for his world class singing and was a bass singer for the Singing Kernels, a chorus he founded with the International Society of Barbershop Singing in 1989.  Mike was known for his storytelling and jokes at the annual McGuire family reunion. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews from the Barber and McGuire families. Mike leaves behind his faithful, loving wife and best friend of 52 years, Dorothy 'Dottie' McGuire Barber.  Eldest son, Mike and wife Jami and their 2 sons, Jared and Derek, all of Ross, Ohio.  Middle son, Lieutenant Colonel John Christopher, U.S. Army and wife Soyon and their 4 sons, James, John, Daniel, Joseph, and daughter Sarah, all of Manassas, Virginia. Youngest and favorite singing partner, Bryan Kendall who inherited his Dad's storytelling and humor, of Ashland, KY.  Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by pastor Mike Rice.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.  Visitation is this evening (Tuesday) from 6 - 8 PM.  Condolences may be left at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com





Joe Bounds
1951-2015

Joe Bounds, 64, of Ashland, Ky., husband of Erin M. Anderson Bounds, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Joe was born Jan. 29, 1951, to the late Stanley and Hazel Kirk Bounds. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Stanley Bounds. Joe was of Baptist faith, a retired Clinical Hypnotherapist and a proud Marine. Surviving are daughters Cora Beth (Eddie) Prichard of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Rachel (Nick) Wyrick of Huntington, W.Va.; sons Michael (Hannah) Vickers of San Antonio, Texas, and James Vickers of Florida; three grandchildren, Samuel Joe Prichard, Skylar Bree Wyrick, and Julian Castro; and life-long friend and cousin Marlene (Paul) Cantrell of Danyleton, Ky. Joe was a caring and generous man, whose final act of kindness was to give of himself through Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates. In accordance with Joe's wishes, there will be no services.





Charles Elmer 'Blackie" Gibson

1931 - 2015

 

Charles Elmer "Blackie" Gipson, 84, passed away Monday, April 13th, 2015 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Russell, Kentucky. He was born in Fultz, Kentucky on January 4, 1931,
a son of
the late Joseph and Ruth Littleton Gipson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Esther Laverne Blevins Gipson, six children, a son Joey Gipson of Flatwoods, a son Barry Gipson
and wife Cathy Lynn, of Destin, Florida, a son Stephen Gipson and wife Cathy Lynn, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a daughter Jama Brown of Flatwoods, a son Kelly Gipson and wife
Melissa Gail,
of Pedro, Ohio, a daughter Kimbery Stephenson and husband Chad William, of Lexington, and a brother John Gipson of Grayson. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren
and 8 great- grand children.
Charles had 3 siblings that preceded him in death, sisters Mildrid Jackson and Geneva Mayberry and a brother Joe P. Gipson.
He joined the United States Army in 1948 at 17 years old and served in the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8850 and the Kentucky American Legion.
Charles
was also active and coached throughout his life in both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in the Russell/Flatwoods League, and coached the Greenup County All Stars in both
Leagues
, and was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds. He retired after 42 years of service with Ashland Oil, Inc. and served as a Deacon at the Hoods Creek Freewill Baptist Church and loved
serving
the Lord. Funeral services will be Friday, April 17th, at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Rev. Sheldon Wheeler, Pastor Rick Mays, and Rev. Dale Henson. 
Interment with military honors will be in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast.  Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 - 9 PM.
 
 
 



Arthur Nelson

1952 - 2015

 

Arthur C. Nelson, 62, of Grayson, Kentucky, loving husband of Pearl Prince Nelson, died Sunday evening, April 5th, in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  Arthur was born April 8, 1952 in Boyd County, Kentucky, a son of the late John and Mary Withrow Nelson.  He was of the Baptist Faith and was a construction laborer.  Surviving in addition to his wife include 2 sons, Marshall C. Nelson (Tiffany) and Arthur K. Nelson, both of Grayson, KY.  A daughter, Ruth A. Nelson of Huntington, West Virginia. A brother, John L. Nelson of Waterloo, Ohio.  4 sisters, Louise Osborne, Rosa Meeks, Claudia Copley all of Catlettsburg, KY, and Jennifer Warnock of Flatwoods, KY.  6 Grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 11, at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Rev. Timothy B. Osborne

1959 - 2015

 

Timothy B. Osborne, 55, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, died Saturday morning, April 4th, in Lexington following an extended illness.  Timothy was born August 20, 1959 in Bakersfield, California a son of the late Hiram and Billie Castle Osborne.  He was a pipeline construction laborer and was of the Christian Faith.  Surviving include 2 daughters, Amanda Bradley of Ashland and Madison Osborne of Carter County. A step son, Mark Elswick of Boyd County, and a step daughter Lisa Ison of Carter County. 2 brothers, Billy Joe and Henry Conley of Ashland. A sister, Dorene Jenkins of Carter County, grandson Enoch, and Lisa and Aaron's children.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 8, at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Burial will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 AM until service time.





Claude Whitt
1930 - 2015

Claude Whitt, 84, of Ahsland, former owner and operator of Claudie's Auto Parts, died February 27th at home following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be Friday, March 6 at Noon at Preston Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until service time.



Helen Lou Cantrell Hunt Edmond

1932 - 2015

Helen Lou Cantrell Hunt Edmond, 82, of Westwood Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday February 11, 2015. She passed peacefully in her home with her beloved grandson, Aron Clark, by her side.  She was born on April 25, 1932 in Magoffin County, Kentucky to the late Joe and Myrtle Hamilton Cantrell. She was preceded in death by her first husband Earl Hunt Jr., her second husband Major Charles Edmond, a sister Marie Cantrell Leake (Tom), two brothers Donald Cantrell (Margaret) and Darrell Cantrell (Shirley), a daughter Helen Yvonne Hunt Berry, and a grandson Chris Burchett. Helen leaves behind two brothers Joe Cantrell (Sharon) and Tom Cantrell (June) both of Ashland, two sons Kenneth Hunt and Kevin Hunt (Edwina) both of Westwood, two daughters Jo Ellen Hunt Miller (Tony) of Westwood and Kathy Hunt Spears (Mitchell) of Ashland, 11 grandchildren Aron Clark, Bruce Berry (Angela), Kirk Berry (Kathy), Melanie Hunt Hutchinson, Kevin Charles Hunt, Adam Hunt, Kenton Hunt, Brandon Miller, Kristy Miller Pennington (Aaron), Tracey Burchett, Terri Burchett, 6 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. Helen graduated from Ashland Senior High in 1950, graduated with a MA in education from Morehead State University in 1974, and later received a Rank 1 in Kindergarten Education and as a Reading Specialist, having taught at ACTC and retiring from the Greenup County School System. She was a member of Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church. She had true passion for education and the arts belonging to the Greenup County Education Association (former president), Eastern Kentucky and Kentucky Education Association Retired (serving on the Compliance and Constitution Committee),  Goldenrod Chapter of American Business Women’s Association (previous president), Flatwoods Poetry Society, Kentucky State Poetry Association, Kentucky Creative Arts Club, KYOWA Chapter of the Romance Writers of America (Secretary), Carter County Poetry Association, the Phoenix Writers Poetry Association , the National Federation of Press Women, Inc., was appointed by Governor Paul E. Patton as a member of the Board of Examiners and Registration of Architects (2001-2005), the Greenup County Goodwill circle of King’s Daughters and Sons, and served as a current board member and Chairman of the City Union at King’s Daughters and Sons Assisted Living.  She received numerous honors and awards including ABWA Woman of the Year (3 times), KEA award for best news letter in EKEA, had a biographies published in “Personalities of the South” and “Who’s Who in Women of the World”, and was awarded the honor of Kentucky Colonel.            Helen enjoyed traveling, visiting all but 2 states and traveling to 13 countries. She has also painted approximately twenty murals in schools, homes, and churches. She was active in the Jesse Stuart Foundation, Art in the Park, and various activities with the Highland’s Museum. Along with her other accomplishments, she published the following books : Life Is But A Journey, Ode To Jesse Staurt, Hamilton/Cantrell Genealogy, Hunt/Royce Genealogy. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 14th at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by pastor . Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 AM until service time. Conrad Casper "Sonny" Hoenig

1950 - 2015

 

Conrad Casper "Sonny" Hoenig, 64, of Ashland, husband of Dreama Dawn Abbott Hoenig, died Tuesday afternoon, January 27th, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following a sudden illness.  Sonny was born November 7, 1950 in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Conrad Casper and Melba Evans Hoenig, Sr.  He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was retired from AEP Big Sandy Plant Store room.  Sonny was an avid UK fan and enjoyed playing the guitar. Surviving in addition to his loving wife include a son, Joe Hoenig and wife Karen of Lexington, Kentucky. A daughter, Jennifer Fryman of Lexington, Kentucky. 2 grandchildren, Raegan Gail Hoenig and Wrigley Dawson Fryman. A sister, Sara Jo Browning of Ashland, and 3 nephews, Jeff, John, and James Browning, all of Ashland.  A memorial service will be held tomorrow evening, Friday, January 30th, at Fairview Baptist Church at 7:00 PM by Pastor Mike Rice.  Visitation will be at the church from 5:00 PM until service time.  Contributions may be made in Sonny's memory, In lieu of Flowers, to Fairview Baptist Church, 2040 Main Street, Ashland, Kentucky 41102. Helen Unrue Fields

1932 - 2015

 

Helen Lucille Unrue Fields, 82, of Westwood, Kentucky, died peacefully Sunday evening at Oakmont Manor, Flatwoods, KY, with her family at her bedside. Helen was born May 17, 1932 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Charles and Goldia Mae Johnson Unrue.  She was retired from the Fairview Independent School System and a member of the Westwood Wesleyan Church.  Helen was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Earl 'June Bug' Fields, a son, Ed Fields, and 2 brothers, Joseph Gerald Unrue and Kenneth E. Unrue.  Surviving include a daughter, Lesa Fields Spicer and husband Paul of Westwood, KY. A brother James Unrue and wife Kay of Russell, Kentucky, a sister Wilma Coburn and husband Arnold of Cannonsburg, Kentucky. 6 grandchildren, Aaron Tackett, Stacy Hendrickson, Nick Fields, Amanda Fields, Nichole Glasser and Ben Spicer.  7 great grandchildren, Haley, Caleb, Olivia, Jacob, Alleighson, Landon, Molly, and her precious dog, Chico. Also special friends James Barber, Juanita Gullett, and daughter in law, Rebecca Fields Walker.  Graveside Services will be Wednesday, January 26th at 1:00 PM at Dixon Cemetery by pastor Mike Rice.  Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME. James Delbert Spears

1963 - 2015

 

James Delbert Spears, 51, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Sunday morning, January 18th, following a sudden illness at Kings Daughters Medical Center.  James was born July 7, 1963 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of Ernie Spears of Ashland and the late Patricia Huguenot Spears.  He was employed through the Teamsters Local 175 Charleston, WV, and was a U.S. Army Veteran.  James was also preceded in death by a brother, Brian Keith Spears and a granddaughter, La Mirah Jackson. Surviving in addition to his father include his wife, Stephanie Brown Spears. A stepson, Alec Brown of Ashland. A daughter, Samantha Massie of Westwood, Kentucky. 3 sisters, Lynette Speaks (Scott) of Raceland, KY, Lori Miller(George) of Cannonsburg, KY, Lisa Phelps (Robert) of Georgetown, KY, a grandson, Aayden Massie, and a special friend, Pam Shelton. Kernie Parsons

1949 - 2015

Kernie Parsons, 65, of Ashland, KY, was found to be with our Lord on Friday, January 16, 2015.  He was born September 15, 1949, in Drift, KY, to the late George and Opal Kidd Parsons (Harvey).He was a 1967 graduate of Martin High School in Martin, KY, and was employed with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital from 1969 until his retirement over 30 years later.  In the 1980’s he was active in the establishment of Hucks Fruit Market, his brother Covon Parsons’ store in Greenup, KY; he also established his own business, The Captain’s Curiosity, next door. Kernie’s greatest joy was to share our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with family, friends and strangers alike.  An avid reader, he was most passionate about the Bible and studied it daily.  He openly expressed his excitement for The Word with anyone willing to listen, and found no greater pleasure than to converse with someone hungry for more about Jesus.  He was generous in all manners, a kind heart and stranger to none.  He strived to be the true definition of a Christian, to be like Christ, and reminded us all to “read the Bible, follow Jesus and obey God.” He is survived by his daughter, Andrea (Annie) Parsons of Catlettsburg, KY, his only child from a marriage to Diane Stone (Gullett) of Westwood, KY.  He is also survived by his brother, Bernie Parsons (Debra) of Lloyd, KY, and two sisters, Bonnie Osborne of McDowell, KY, and Bea Coriell (Mike) of Raceland, KY, a great aunt, Dimple Clark, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father (Joe Harvey), and four brothers, Covon Parsons, Nolan Parsons, George Parsons and Dwight Parsons.

 

 

  

Madelon Louise Venters

Madelon Louise Venters, 92, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Thursday evening, January, 15th, in Oakmont Manor Nursing Care following an extended illness.  Madelon was born June 21, 1922 in West Virginia, a daughter of the late John and Anna Meixner Watson.  She was a former sales associate with Stecklers and Stars Clothing in Ashland for many years and was a member of the Ashland Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the 1st Methodist Church of Ashland and attended Little Jewell Regular Baptist Church.  Madelon was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Walter Stewart Venters, and a grandson, Otis Steele, Jr. Surviving include a son, Kenneth Venters and wife Linda, of Ashland, Kentucky, 3 grandchildren, Kristi Venters Sherlock and husband Cameron, Kyle David Venters, and Angie Salyers and husband Delbert.  3 great grandchildren, Cameron Walter Sherlock, Jessica and Jordan Salyers. Additional survivors include the extended family of John Burke, Sr. and the late Ethel Burke. Funeral Services will be Monday, January 19th at 1:00 at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Bro. William John Fraley, 91, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully, Friday, January 9th, at Wurtland Manor Health Care following an extended illness.  John was born December 11, 1923 in Elliott County, Kentucky, a son of the late Adam and Cynthia Fraley.  He was a retired master electrician with IBEW #317 Huntington, West Virginia, and was a member of the Hoods Creek Freewill Baptist Church.  John was a bluegrass music fan and enjoyed spending time on the golf course. After he retired, he worked part time at the Diamond Links Golf Club.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his loving wife, Kathleen Greene Fraley, a son, Robert Eugene Fraley, a grandson, John Wesley Fraley, 3 sisters, Freda Salyers, Nanny Adkins, Virginia Sloan, and a brother Ferris Fraley.  Surviving include a son, John Fraley, Jr. and wife Debbie of Catlettsburg. 2 daughters, Phyllis Withrow and husband Dave of Ashland, and Janet Rakes of Ashland. 2 brothers, Rudolph and Sonny Fraley of Ashland. 2 sisters, Jean Fraley of Ashland, and Alberta McDowell of Portsmouth, Ohio. 4 grandchildren, Michelle Crisp, Karrie Vance (Jeff), Keith Withrow (Tiffany), Sherry Cavezza (Ed). 2 step grandchildren, Scott Evans (Jessie) and Clinton Evans (Megan). 8 great grandchildren, Trinity Crisp, Emma Vance, Kali Vance, Cody Withrow, Katie Withrow, Tyson Withrow, Ryan Mayle, Toby Mayle, and 7 step great grandchildren, Breanna, Shelby, and Riley Grensberry, Beau Smith, Wiley, Lincoln, and Alivia Evans.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 13th at 1:00 PM by Pastor Sheldon Wheeler at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Burial will be in the Hutchinson Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 AM until service time. Ora L. Cooksey, 88, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Mildred Lawson Cooksey, died Monday evening at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following an extended illness.  Ora was born August 31, 1926 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, a son of the late Bert and Gertrude Boggs Cooksey.  He was a member of the 13th Street Freewill Baptist Church where he enjoyed fellowship with his church family and loved the music.  Ora began singing gospel music at the age of 14 and later he and Mildred were associated with the Christianaires Quartet for 25 years.  Ora was retired from Semet Solvay division of Allied Chemical and served in the US Army from January 1946 through January 1947.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a grandson, Jeremy Cooksey in 2003.  2 brothers, Junior Cooksey and Franklin Cooksey, and 4 sisters, Mary Jane Hills, Jean Bush, Doris Bolt, and Kitty Price.  Surviving, in addition to his loving wife of 66 years, include 2 sons, Don Cooksey and wife Debbie of Ashland, KY.  Lucian Dean Cooksey and wife Linda of Frankfort, Kentucky. 3 grandchildren, Josh Cooksey, Jessica Winfield, and Chris Cooksey. 3 great grandchildren, Tanner and Bailey Winfield, Robert Cooksey, and a sister, Jewell Johnson of Fallsburg, Kentucky. Cora Jean Meek Newman, 83, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Tuesday evening, January 6th at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.  Cora was born June 24, 1931 in Busseyville, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Bourbon E. and Myrtle Hughes Meek.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Louisa, Kentucky. She  was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Ray Newman, and a sister, Ruth Spradlin.  Surviving are a son, John Burton III and wife Joyce of Ashland, Kentucky.  Two daughters, Jean Ann Morton and husband John of Milton, West Virginia, Donna Herndon and husband David, of Ashland, Kentucky. A brother, Zane G. Meek of Ashland, Kentucky,   five grandchildren and a great grandchild.  Cora was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Louisa Chapter.  She was well known in various genealogical chapters and authored several books on the ancestral history of the local area and families. Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2901 Winchester Avenue, Ashland, KY by Rev. Jesse Celve (JC) 'Beaver' Williams, 75, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Thursday evening, January 8th, at Community Hospice Care Center with his family at his bedside. Jesse was born May 11, 1939 in Ashland, a son of the late Palmer and Gladys King Williams.  He was retired from the B&O Department and continuous caster at AK Steel and was a former member of the National Guard 201st Battalion, Ashland, Kentucky.  Jesse was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, Judy York Williams and 2 brothers, Vernon and Roger Williams.  Surviving include a son, Bruce Williams and wife Brigette of Goshen, Kentucky, a daughter, Kimberly Laslo of Westwood, Kentucky, 4 grandchildren and a sister, Wanda Doty of Westwood.  Funeral services will be Monday, January 12th at 11:00 AM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Pastor Jason Thomas.  Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum. Charles Hubert 'Buddy' White, 75, of Greenup, Kentucky, died peacefully at his home, Friday morning, January 2nd, following an extended illness.  Buddy was born October 11, 1939 in Boyd County, Kentucky, a son of Thelma Yates White of Florida and the late Alfred White.  He was retired head mechanic with the Ashland Independent School Board of Education and a member of the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle.  Buddy was preceded in death, in addition to his father, by a sister, Cora Hunt.  Surviving in addition to his mother include his wife, Wanda Salyers White. 2 daughters, Charlotte Gullett (Larry) of Greenup, Kentucky, and Cheryl 'Sherry' Gearhart (Tim Thompson) of Russell, Kentucky. A sister, Patty Maupin (Denny) of Florida. 4 grand daughters, Erica Campbell, Lauren Gullett, Sara Gearhart, Baylie Gullett, and a great grand daughter, Khloe Campbell. Perry Stevens

1958 - 2014

 

Perry Thomas Stevens, 56, of Westwood, husband of Myra Franklin Stevens, died Monday morning, December 29th in Community Hospice Care Center following a 14 year battle from the result of a stroke he suffered on Christmas Day 2000.  Perry was born November 26, 1958 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of the late Glen and Bertha Bess Hood Stevens.  He was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Bekah Stevens in April of 2013.  Perry was a 1976 graduate of Fairview High School where he was the 'Voice of the Eagles' for 14 years and was inducted into the Fairview Hall of Fame. He was a former employee of AEP Kentucky Power where he worked with an amazing group that have supported him for the past 14 years following his stroke.  Perry was a former Director of the Westwood Boys Club where he coached football.  He was an elementary boys basketball coach in the Fairview system. He helped coach the Junior High girls to a league championship and was an assistant coach in the Ashland National Little League.  Perry loved to fish, hunt, golf, play basketball and softball and was the "Dad" of the annual Westwood Turkey Bowl.  Most of all, Perry loved the Lord. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, serving as Deacon, former youth director, taught a college career class that is named after him, and was a Vacation Bible School worship leader. He lived his life to show Jesus to others. He had the ability to bond with all kids and teenagers, setting an example by his own actions.  He authored 2 books, "I'd Like to Return this Gift" and "Lighthouse Beams".  Perry also managed a daily devotional, "Lighthouse Beam".  After suffering his stroke, which he was a miracle to have survived, Perry continued to do whatever he could to share Jesus with others. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Myra, include a son, Drew Stevens of Covington, Kentucky.  2 sisters, Judy Parker of Ashland and Jeanie Creamer of Westwood.  Mother and Father in law, Henry and Mildred Franklin of Summit, Kentucky. A brother in law, Marty Franklin of Summit, a sister in law, Leshia Routzon and husband Mike  of Florence, Kentucky. Nieces and Nephews, a special group of kids that he referred to as 'his babies', and a special companion, Bo, who cared for him as though he was his pup.

Donald Ralph Church, 87, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, December 30th at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.  Donald was born September 10, 1927 in Boyd County, Kentucky, a son of the late John and Mima Leadingham Church.  He was a self employed maintenance contractor and a member of the Bethlehem Church United Baptist, Kenova, West Virginia.  Donald enjoyed listening and playing Bluegrass music and was very fond of his neighbors and staff at Woodland Oaks where he was a resident for 2 1/2 years.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents by his wife, Arbutus in 2003, 2 brothers and a sister.  Surviving include 3 sons, Donald Eugene Church and wife Donna of Willard, Kentucky, Kenneth Church and wife Anita of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Glen Church and wife Christine of Florence, Kentucky. 7 grand children and 6 great grandchildren.  Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 3rd at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Ed McKinney.  Burial will be in the Dixon Cemetery, Westwood, Kentucky. Larry Vencon Wheeler

Larry Vencon Wheeler, 55, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Marie Parker Wheeler, died Tuesday, December 30th, at his residence following a sudden illness.  Larry was born March 26, 1959 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of the late Vencon James and Daisy Byron Young Wheeler.  He was an electrician with IBEW 317, Huntington, West Virginia, enjoyed the outdoors, farming, fishing, and had a special relationship with animals and a love for horses. Larry was especially proud of his three children,  Dr. Sarah 'Nikki' Wheeler of Raleigh, North Carolina, Martin Vencon Wheeler of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Larra Marie Wheeler of Ashland, Kentucky.  Additional survivors include 5 sisters, Sharon Easterling of Flatwoods, Bonnie May of Erlanger, KY, Madelyn Salyers of Ashland, Paula Hieneman of Ashland, and Joan Patrick of Argillite, KY.  Larry will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews and his close buddies from IBEW.  Funeral Services will be Monday, January 5th at 11:00 AM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Gary Salyers.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.  Visitation is Sunday evening from 6 - 9 PM. Charles R. Griffith, 69, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, husband of Bonita Hern Griffith, died suddenly Monday morning, December 22nd at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.  Charles was born September 28, 1945 in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Van Donald and Bertha Alice Stanley Griffith.  He was of the Baptist Faith and was retired from the CSX Raceland Car Shops. Surviving in addition to his wife include a son, Charles L. Griffith and wife Karen of Winchester, Kentucky. Velva June Cremeans, 75, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Milton Eugene Cremeans of 57 years, died peacefully Sunday morning, December 21st, in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  June was born April 24, 1939 in Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Jerrel and Vesta White Stanley. She was a faithful member of the Hoods Creek Enterprise Baptist Church and always enjoyed the fellowship of her church family.  June was a former Mary Kay representative, a book keeper with Den-Ral Construction and a former manpower employee at Kentucky Power Company and Calgon.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a son, Stan Cremeans in 2003, and a brother Rodney Stanley.  Surviving in addition to her husband include 2 sons, Stephen Cremeans of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Paul Cremeans and wife Anna of Russell, Kentucky. A daughter, Danita Irwin and husband Charlie Mike of Edgewood, Kentucky. A brother, Jerrel Fredrick Stanley of Florida. Duane F. Armstrong, 88, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, husband of Jessie Stewart Armstrong, died Wednesday morning, December 17th, at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  Duane was born April 21, 1926 in Wheeling, West Virginia, a son of the late Wiley Vernard and Ethel Margaret Junkins Armstrong.  He was a retired engineer with Verizon, a proud WWII veteran, having served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater, a member of the American Legion Post 76, Ashland, Kentucky and the VFW London, KY Post 3302.  Duane was preceded in death, in addition to his parents by his first wife, MArtha Louise Ackerman Armstrong.a brother, Eugene Armstrong, and a sister, Helen Gould.  Surviving in addition to his wife Jessie include a son, Rodney Armstrong and wife Regina of London, Kentucky. A daughter, Jill Ann Chumbley and husband Rick of Manchester, Tennessee. A step daughter, Bennita Meeks and husband Jim of Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Thelma Holmes Fitzer, 88, of Westwood, Kentucky, widow of James H. Fitzer, died Tuesday evening, December 16, 2014 in Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland following a sudden illness. Doug Stevens, 55, of Westwood, Kentucky, died Sunday evening, December 7th at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.  Doug was born January 4, 1959 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of Doug Stevens of Westwood, Kentucky and the late Rosemary Runyon Stevens.  He was a retired Xray technician with Kings Daughters Medical Center, a member of the Ashland Eagles BPOE #350, a graduate of Fairview High School and  member of the 2012 Fairview Hall of Fame. Surviving in addition to his father include a son, Douglas Kevin Stevens II of Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter, Kayla Michelle Stevens of Ashland, Kentucky. 2 sisters, Paula Sergent and husband Jim of Ashland, Kentucky, Deborah Stewart and husband Charlie of Summitt, Kentucky, and a brother, William A. Casey Ryan Murphy, 24, of Ashland, Kentucky, son of Harold Ray and Brenda Kay Abrams Murphy, died Tuesday morning at his residence following a sudden illness.  Casey was born September 3, 1990 in Ashland, Kentucky. He was a 2008 graduate of Boyd County High School, enjoyd animals and worked as a veterinarian Tech with Guardian Animal Clinic.  In addition to his parents he is survived by his grandmother, Alberta Murphy.  Visitation is Thursday, November 20, 2014 from Noon until 2:00 PM. Keith Brian Hall

Keith Brian Hall, 58, of Ashland, Kentucky, entered eternal life and went "Out to Lunch" with a smile on Saturday, October 25th at his home, surrounded by his family.  Keith was born January 25, 1956 in Ashland, Kentucky, the youngest son of the late James Mitchell and Hazel Louise Smith Hall.  He was also preceded in death by a sister Marilyn Jean Colt and a beloved brother Robert Mitchell Hall. He was of the Baptist Faith, was a Laborer with the Laborers Local 1445 of Ashland, and a member of the Ashland Eagles BPOE 350 Daniel Boone Aerie.

Keith is survived by the love of his life, his wife Nancy Ann Clay Hall.  Two sons, Keith Brian Hall II and Amy of Ashland, Kentucky and Teddy Keith Hall and wife Rose of Ashland, Kentucky.  3 brothers, Charles Edwin Smith (Jennifer) of Lancaster, Ohio, John C. Smith (Donna) of Ashland, Kentucky, and James Lee Hall (Deborah) of Ashland, Kentucky.  2 sisters, Shirley Louise Frasher of Proctorville, Ohio and Glenna Katherine Hopkins (Terrance) of Patriot, Ohio.  Two granddaughters, Amber Turner and Brittany Trent and a precious great grandson, 'Crazy' Braden Sprague.  His dog Gizmo and a host of nieces and nephews.

Paul Edward Bradley, Jr., 61, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Laura Bruckse Bradley, died Sunday evening, October 19th, at Community Hospice following an extended illness. Paul was born May 20, 1953 at Edwards Air Force Base in Edwards, California.  He was the son of the late Gloria Jean McCallister and Paul Bradley, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Bradley, in 2012. Paul was a member of the First Baptist Church, Russell, KY, where he was involved in the Mercy Seekers Sunday School Class. Paul loved spending time with his family and attending his children’s sporting events. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved canoeing, camping and hiking. He also was a huge fan of the Kentucky Wildcats. Paul had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. His family and friends loved him dearly. Paul was a former employee of AK Steel,St. Mary’s and Bellefonte Hospitals. He was currently employed with Distribution Now in Ironton, Ohio, and worked as a purchasing agent at Bayer Institute in Institute, WV. Surviving in addition to his loving wife include a son, Nicholas Edward Bradley, two daughters, Sarah Ellen Bradley and Katherine Grae Bradley, all of Ashland, Kentucky, and granddaughter Isabelle Grae Gallaher; two sisters, Madonna Ferrell of Russell, Kentucky, and Meschelle McCleese of Greenup, Kentucky, and a brother, Brett Bradley of Marion, Ohio.  Funeral services will be Thursday, October 23rd, at 1:00 PM with visitation from 11:00-1:00 at the First Baptist Church of Russell by Pastor Ken Gowin.  Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery.  Visitation will be this evening (Wednesday) from 6 - 9 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME. Oliver Gregory Little, 53, of Chesapeake, Ohio, died peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.  He was born December 1, 1960 at McDowell, Kentucky a son of Oliver and Delores Fay Fraley Little, Jr.  Greg was a Chief Head End Technician with Armstrong Utilities, he enjoyed motorcycling and spending time outdoors.  He is survived by his fiance', Becky McKinney of Charleston, West Virginia. Clarence Adkins, 88, of Ashland, KY, died Thursday, October 9th, 2014, at Community Hospice Care Center of Ashland, KY.  He  was the former owner and operator of Adkins Electronics in Ashland. Clarence was born on August 8th, 1926, a son of the late Leslie Adkins, Sr. and Nannie Lee Moore. He was proceeded in  death by two brothers, Leslie Adkins, Jr., and Chester Adkins and four sisters, Arlie May Adkins, Barbara Ellen Rowe, Mary Lee Adkins, and Joyce Ann Adkins. Surviving include his wife, Anna Adkins, three sons, Ronald Lee Adkins and wife Patricia of Manassas, VA, Jerry Adkins and wife Monina of Ashland, KY,  and David Michael Adkins and wife Linda of Russell, KY, daughter Sandra Kay Donaldson and husband Bert of Locust Grove, VA, brother Donald Ray Adkins and wife Carol of Flatwoods, KY, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Ricky Adkins.  Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.  In Clarence's memory contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, Tennessee 38105. Thomas Earl Lemaster, 86, of Grayson, Kentucky, husband of Elizabeth A. Hensley Lemaster, died peacefully Monday morning, September 1st, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.  Tom was born April 12, 1928 in Russell, Kentucky, a son of the late Elmo and Nancy McKenzie Lemaster.  He attended the Freedom Tabernacle in Webbville, KY,  was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, and was the owner and operator of Tireland of Ashland and Russell.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a step daughter, Dreama Combs, a sister, Margarite Lemaster, and 2 grandchildren.  Surviving in addition to his wife include, 4 sons, Michael Lemaster and wife Sandy of Live Oak, Florida, Timothy Lemaster and wife Julie of Nicholasville, Kentucky, James Lemaster of Columbus, Ohio, and Benjamin Lemaster and wife Leslie of Russell, Kentucky.  A daughter, Vera Sue Harmon and husband Steven of West Palm Beach, Florida. A stepson, Carl 'Rick' Combs and step daughters Martha Holbrook and husband Mike , Melissa Martin and husband Jeff, and Robin Cody and husband Jeff, all of Ashland, Kentucky. Several grand children and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 4th at 1:00 PM by Rev. Ralph Morman
1948 - 2014

Ralph Bernard Morman, Jr., 65, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Debra Cox
Morman, died peacefully Sunday morning, August 17th, following an extended
illness.  Ralph was born December 23, 1948 at Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the
late Ralph B. and Helen Carroll Morman, Sr.  Ralph was preceded in death, in
addition to his parents, by a brother, Ron Morman.  Surviving in addition to his
loving wife, Deb, include 4 sons, Tony Morman of South Point, Dustin Shane Downs
of Georgetown, Kentucky, James "Jay" Kelley Downs of Ashland, Kentucky, and
Kasey Morman of Ashland, Kentucky.  One daughter, Shannon Star Morman of
California. He was "Poppie" to his 5 grandchildren, Hannah, Haylie, Macie and
Trevor Downs and Toby Morman, who were the most precious things in the world to
him.
Ralph was a musician and an entertainer who's career began in the early 60's
singing for the local rock group 'The Outkast'.  Ralph persued his music career
and became a member of the former Warbux band with Punky Meadows, Rocky Issac,
and Micky Jones in the band 'BUX'.  In the following 2 years, Ralph approached
Joe Perry and became the lead vocalist for the 'Joe Perry Project' from 1979
through 1980.  Ralph's last few years in the music industry was in 1980 through
1982 with Kim Simmonds and 'Savoy Brown', an English blues rock band.
Throughout his career, Ralph always remembered where his roots were.  He and
Deb enjoyed a 30 year marriage and loving relationship with their children,
grandchildren and close friends.  A celebration of Ralph's life will be

Drennen Clark 'D.C.' Esham, 78, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Hazel Collins Esham, died Wednesday, July 9, in Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness. D.C. was born April 19, 1936 in Lewis County, Kentucky, a son of the late Richard T. and Gladys Estep Esham. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by 2 brothers Tom and Clayton Esham, a sister Judy Phillips, and 2 great grandsons, Rodney E. Dunn II and Luke Aaron Dunn. He was a retired Insurance Salesman, owner of Esham Insurance Agency, and an Ordained Minister. Surviving are 2 sons, Jeff Esham and wife Katie of Cooper City, Florida, Tom Esham of Ashland, Kentucky. 4 daughters, Barbara Dunn and husband Rodney of Ashland, Kentucky, Joyce Blanton and husband Bill of Ashland, Kentucky, Nancy Esham May of Boynton, Florida, and Judy Pruitt of Ashland, Kentucky. 4 Brothers, Kenneth Esham, Jim Esham, and Gary David Esham , all of Vanceburg, Kentucky and Joe Dale Esham of Salt Lick, Kentucky, and a sister Delores Bays of Vanceburg, Kentucky. 7 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. Ronald William Ratliff

Ronald William Ratliff, 49, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Cheri Chandler
Ratliff, died Wednesday morning at his residence following a sudden illness. 
Ron was born June 23, 1965 in Huntington, West Virginia, a son of the late Mary
Bess Goldie Ratliff and Clyde E, Ratliff (Ruth). He was preceded in death, in
addition to his mother, by a brother, Matthew Ratliff.  Ronald was a graduate of
Boyd County High School,  He attended Oakland Avenue Baptist Church in
Catlettsburg, Kentucky and was a member of the Westwood Enterprise Baptist
Church. Ron was a beloved husband, father and Coach. He had touched so many
lives with his work and coaching, and made a great impact on his children and
players and wanted to do the same with his grandchildren. He was so proud of all
of them. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, father, and stepmother,
include a son, A.J. Hensley and wife Kirbi of Flatwoods, Kentucky.  2 daughters,
Morgan Shaye Ratliff Gipson and husband Chris, and Sarah Marybeth Ratliff, all
of Ashland, Kentucky.  A brother, Robert Ratliff and wife Teressa.  2 step
brothers, Troy and Andy Holsinger. 3 step sisters, Brenda McDonald, Sherry
Holsinger, Gail Newman, and 2 grand children, Jackson and Chloe. He will be
sadly missed by all of us but would want us to laugh and rejoice.  Funeral
services will be Sunday, July 6th at 3:00 PM at the Oakland Avenue Baptist
Church in Catlettsburg, Kentucky by Pastor Michael Blankenship.  Visitation will
be Sunday at the church from 1:00 PM until service time.  Burial will be in the

Betty Jo Holbrook

Betty Jo Robinette Holbrook, 86, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 28th, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility following an extended illness.  She was born December 27, 1927 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Ernest and Lillian Robinette.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a grandson, Steven Holbrook,  and two brothers, Ernest Robinette, Jr., and Edward Robinette.  Betty was a retired cook with Elmwood Village Nursing Home and was a former waitress at the Chimney Corner Restaurant.  Surviving include a son, Gary Holbrook and wife Margaret of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.  Three daughters, Carloyn Bowling and husband Gary of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Mary Ann Whetsel of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and Brenda Wheeler and husband Burford of Ashland, Kentucky.  5 grandchildren, Jennifer Holbrook, Christy Kelly and husband Jack, Sandra Hayes and husband Paul, Todd Brownson, and Brad Wheeler.  6 great grandchildren, Dylan and Sydney Horton, Seth and Casey Kelly, Payton and Rachael Hayes, and a host of friends.  Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:00 AM at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens by Pastor Tom Keelin.  Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home. Opal Marie Young, 52, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Dean Young, died peacefully Thursday, June 26, 2014,  at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.  Opal Marie was born August 4, 1961 at Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Robert and Lillie Harr Rigsby.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Patty Rigsby Smallridge.  Surviving, in addition to her husband include, a son, B.J. Vanatter of Westwood, KY.  A daughter, Jessica Vanatter of Ashland, KY. Stepson, Dean Young and wife Jean Marie of Ashland, KY. Step daughters, Ericka and husband Scott Worthington of Flatwoods, KY and Melinda James of Ashland, KY. 4 brothers Bobby Rigsby, Paul Rigsby and Pete Rigsby of Catlettsburg, KY and Eddie Rigsby of Ashland, KY.  4 sisters, Kay Rigsby of Ashland, KY, Lotus Cornwell of Tenessee, Margie Rigsby of Ashland, KY, Mary Rigsby Kazee of Florida, and 9 grandchildren.

Gabriel Edward Walker

Gabriel Edward "Eddie" Walker, 61, of Westwood, Kentucky, husband of Rebecca Early Fields Walker, died Friday morning, June 20, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.  Eddie was born December 26, 1952 in Newport, Rhode Island, a son of the late James and Lorraine Pimental Walker.  He was a proud Unites States Army veteran, having served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. Eddie was also a self employed automobile enthusiast, enjoying auto detailing and repair.  Among his hobbies included antique hunting and selling. He was a true 'picker' long before picking became popular. Surviving in addition to his loving wife include 3 sons: Jason, Brandon, and Josh Walker of Ironton, Ohio. A daughter, Brittany Pinkerman of Willowood, Ohio.  2 step children, Amanda and Nick Fields of Westwood, Kentucky.  2 brothers, Gerald Walker of Summitt, Kentucky and Dale Walker of Ashland, Kentucky, a sister, Margaret Maynard of Ashland, Kentucky, 7 grandchildren and 1 due soon.

William Michael Rankin

William Michael Rankin, known by his close friends as 'Bill', 62 years of age, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, died Saturday morning, May 31, 2014 at his residence.  Bill was born July 31, 1951 at  Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Joyce Moore and adopted son of the late James Russell and Veatrice (Dutch) Lykins Rankin.  Bill was retired after 32 years of service in the Blast Furnace at AK Steel Corporation.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Deloris Rankin and brothers Roy C, James Russell Jr., George W., and Hubert Raymond Rankin.  He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Preece Rankin, a son, Jim Rankin and wife Angel of Catlettsburg, Kentucky. 2 grandchildren Austin and Ashton, and a sister Barbara McKnight Caudill.  Bill enjoyed repairing and working with computers, riding motorcycles, fishing, and especially photographing and watching his grandkids play sports.

Mary Magdalene Beach Whitt, 90, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Saturday evening, May 17, 2014 at her home, with her family at her side, following an extended illness.  Mary was born June 21, 1923 at Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Arthur and Icie Arden Beach.  She was a homemaker and a faithful member of the Hoods Creek Baptist Church- 1st Enterprise Association.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her loving husband, Edward Whitt, and a son, William Arthur Whitt.  Surviving include 2 sons, Curtis Allen Whitt and wife Linda of Ashland, Kentucky.  Rickey Whitt and wife Kathy of Ashland, Kentucky. A daughter, Becky Jean Smith and husband Carl of Jamestown, Ohio. Yarber Blair, 82, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Sunday morning, May 4, 2014 at Kings Daughters Medical Center with her loving family at her bedside.  Erline was born April 4, 1932 at Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Gaylord and Naomi Conway White.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents,  by her first husband, Robert Yarber in 1996, a son, Steve Yarber in 1995, 2 brothers, Bob and Michael White, a sister, Wanda Lee White. Donna Belle Thompson, 90, of Route 5, Ashland, went home in the arms of her Lord, Friday evening, April 18th at her residence following a sudden illness. Reba Justice, 76, of Westwood, KY, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, April 17, 2014 at KDMC in Ashland, KY, following an extended illness.  Born September 26, 1937 in Glenwood, Kentucky a daughter of the late George and Murel Kelly Wright.  Reba was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her loving husband, Charles Justice in 2011.  She is survived by 2 sons, George Thurman Justice and wife Betsy of Swansea, Illinois, and Charles Justice, Jr. and wife Cindy of Cross Lanes, West Virginia.  10 grandchildren:  Jessica Chouinard (Matt), Paige Sheraden (Jordan), Christen Justice and fiance' Chris Schumacher, Matthew Justice and wife Emmy, Nicholas  Justice and fiance' Missy Geyer, and Michael Justice.  Jenny Jones, Allie Gillen (Jon), Lori Jones, and Megan Jones, a great grandson, Luke McDougal, great grand daughter Ada, and 2 more expected great grand children .  She is also survived by a sister, Freda Parsons of Ohio.  Reba was a devoted member of the Fairview Baptist Church and enjoyed the times that she spent with her church family.  She was retired from the Ashland Area YMCA where she was an administrative assistant for over 30 years.  Funeral services will be held, Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Fairview Baptist Church by Brother Mike Rice.  Interment will be in the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens, Flatwoods, Kentucky.  Visitation will be on Saturday from 11:00 AM until service time at the church.  Contributions may be made in Reba's memory to the Perry and Myra Stevens Fund c/o Fairview Baptist Church, 2040 Main Street, Ashland, Kentucky 41102.  Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Jerry Ray 'Huey Pig' Moore, 63, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Laurie Woodburn Moore, died Monday morning at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  Jerry was born December 22, 2014 at Boyd County, Kentucky.  'Huey Pig', as he was known by many, was a retired laborer from Ashland Laborer's Local 1445 and was a lifetime member of the NRA.  He was preceded in death by his father, Carl J. Moore, his mother and stepfather, Kathleen Nolan Moore & Sidney 'Jack' Kendrick, and a brother, Roger Moore.  Surviving in addition to his loving wife include 2 sons, Shane J. Moore and wife Kimberly of Salt Lick, Kentucky, and Jeromy C. Moore of Ashland, Kentucky.  A daughter, Jennifer Hunter and husband J.D. of San Antonio, Texas. 1 Brother, James Wendell Moore and wife Yvette of Ashland, Kentucky. 3 sisters, Carol Jean and husband Don Tackett of Ashland, Kentucky, Helen and husband Farron Frashure of Westwood, Kentucky, Patricia Brown of Ashland, Kentucky.  2 grandchildren, Carter Layne Moore and Whitney Whittaker and a great grandson, Addyson Schrann.

Wanda Lee Rogers, 71, of Ashland, Kentucky, loving wife of Jack Rogers, died Friday evening, April 4, 2014 at Community Hospice Care Center with her family at her bedside following an extended illness.  Wanda was born November 19, 1942 in Huntington, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Frank Ferguson and Goldie Shelins Ferguson Meadings.  She was a member of the Ironville Independent Baptist Church and was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Ferguson.  Surviving in addition to her husband include 2 sons, Barry and wife Jo Anne of Ashland, Kentucky, Stephen and wife Sandy of Ashland. 3 daughters, Becky Rice of Ashland, Kentucky, Michelle Bright of Seattle, Washington, and Melissa Burns of Ashland, Kentucky. A sister, Mary Gossett of Columbus, Ohio. Harry Samuel 'Sam' Rigsby

1933 - 2014

 

Mr. Rigsby was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on March 30, 2014. He was born July 5, 1933 and born again March 27, 2014.  Sam worked at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital 41 years and retired in 1998.  He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952 - 1956.  Sam dearly loved his family and would do anything for any of them.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lillian Wells Rigsby, and by a special nephew that he talked about often, Randy Blanton.  Surviving include his wife of 61 years, Lona Russell Rigsby, 2 sisters, Betty (Roger) Rice of Catlettsburg, KY and Ernestine (Bill) Blanton of Ashland, KY. 2 sons, Don (Barb) Rigsby of Russell, KY and Jeff (Cindy) Rigsby of Russell, KY.  5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews and a special caregiver who was as close as family, Marilyn.  Harry will be greatly missed by family and friends.  A military service will be presented today (Tuesday) at 1:30 PM at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Visitation will be from noon today until 1:00 PM.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

 

Terry William Murphy

Terry William Murphy, 66, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Sarah McNabb Murphy, died peacefully, Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Community Hospice Care Center with his loving family at his bedside.  Terry was born August 31, 1947 in Frenchburg, Kentucky, a son of Virginia Lee Holbrook Murphy  of Ashland, Kentucky, and the late Kermit Murphy.   Mr. Murphy entered the USAF in 1966, was commissioned as a Sgt. in 1968 and was Honorably discharged in 1972.  He was self employed in the trucking industry.   Terry enjoyed attending church at Fairview Baptist and was an avid golfer.  Surviving in addition to his mother and loving wife include two brothers, Phillip Murphy and wife Diana of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and Gary Murphy and wife Sherry of Raleigh, N.C..  Two sisters, Diane Morrison and husband Kent of Ashland, Kentucky and Yvonne Harper of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, 10 nieces and nephews along with several great nieces and nephews.

Ora Jean Hill, 62, of Greenup, Kentucky, formerly of Westwood, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Cabell Huntington Hospital following a sudden accident.  Ora Jean was born May 23, 1951 at Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late William and Helen Kazee Hill.  She was retired from the electrical department at AK Steel, enjoyed living down on Little Sandy and dearly loved rescuing Chiuaua's.  She is survived by a sister, Kim Grant of Wurtland, KY, and 3 brothers, Cranston and Creighton Hill of Ashland, Jimmy Hill of Willowood, Ohio.  The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

 

 

Jerry Lowman

Jerry Lowman, 61, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Saturday afternoon, March 22nd following a short illness.  Jerry was born July 17, 1951 in Ashland, Kentucky.  He was owner and operator of several local businesses.  He was a boat and car enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kelli Wright Lowman in 2008 and his parents, E.B. and Olive Douglas Lowman. Surviving include his daughter, Amy Rucker and husband Brandon of Rush, Kentucky. A grandson, Braden Rucker, and a special nephew Jeremy Wright.  Other surviving family members include, Sam Caudill, Cortnie Kirk, and Brittany Glover. Other nieces and nephews include Lindsay Wright, Cole Wright, James Michael Rakes and Jordan Kelli Rakes. Karyn Sue Louise Fields, 21, of Ashland, Kentucky, born September 8, 1992, passed on to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, 
March 13, 2013 after complications from a prolonged illness.  Karyn was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Karen Wallace and 
Verna 'Pat' Tucker, uncles Johnny Armstrong and Joseph Stone.  She leaves behind her mother, Angela Acerbis, father Richard Fields, 
step father Dean Acerbis. Brothers, Steven Fields and Kyle Hoose, sister Kristine Fields, niece Angel Hoose, adopted nephew Michael 
Gamble, God daughter Angelina Camp and many family and friends who loved her dearly.  Karen is to be remembered for her

Rene Raceine Ratliff Bryan, 82, of Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Saturday morning, March 15th, at Community Hospice Care Center with her daughters at her bedside, following an extended illness.  Rene was born November 7, 1931 at Toler, Kentucky in Pike County, a daughter of the late Lawyer and Georgia Griffey Ratliff.  She was a homemaker and was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a grandson, Adam Estep, 5 brothers and a sister.  Surviving include 2 sons, Donald Estep of Lasage, West Virginia, and Howard Randall Bryan of Ashland, Kentucky.  2 daughters, Cheryl Bryan Hayworth of Kernersville, North Carolina, and Carol Bryan of Westwood, Kentucky.  18 grandchildren, Tammey Davison, Eugenia Strucher, Donna Yinger, Jeremy Estep, Angela Estep, Donald Estep, Julia Bryan, Renee Bryan, Bruce Bryan, Chris Bryan, Jasper Bryan, Joseph Layne (Julie), Jonathan Layne, Tasha Barrett (Chris), Scott Ball (Whitney), Laura Tackett (Bryan), Megan 'Little Granny' Parker, and Levi Parnell. She was also survived by 19 great grandchildren.

Constance "Connie" Honaker

Constance Blanton Honaker, 69, of Ashland, Kentucky, widow of Jim Honaker, died Wednesday morning at University of Kentucky Albert Chandler Medical Center following an illness since Christmas eve.  Connie was born June 24, 1944 at Maggard, Kentucky a daughter of the late Richmond and Trixie Howard Blanton.  She was a retired nurse having worked in the offices of Dr. S. Grey Hunter and Dr. Malcolm King. She was a retired cook with the Ashland School system as well. Connie was a member of the Hoods Creek Baptist Church of the 1st Enterprise Association and dearly loved to worship and fellowship with her church family. Connie was also past Associate Conductress of the Westwood Chapter OES # 569. She is survived by her loving son, J.R. Honaker and his fiance' Mabrie Davis, many relatives and a host of friends.  Funeral services will be Monday, March 17, 2014 at 1:00 PM by Pastor Leo Ison and Bro. Betty Jo McDowell, 86, of Route 5, Ashland, Kentucky, died peacefully Friday, February 21st at St. Mary's Medical Center, with her loving family at her bedside, following a sudden illness.  Betty Jo was born July 20, 1927 at Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Vernal and Lillian Martin Thompson.  She faithfully attended Hoods Creek Enterprise Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship with her church family.  She was an avid gardener and took advantage of every sunny day to tend to her flowers and yard gardening. She was retired from Russell K Mart and Tri State Pediatrics.  Betty Jo was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her loving husband, Charles E. Imogene Doolin Leadingham, February 14, 1938, born to the late Ellis and Rhoda Craft Doolin, Sr., in Redwine, Kentucky. Our mother was the first born of 11 children, which in addition to,  she was preceded in death by an infant brother, William Doolin, a sister, Joyce Ann Doolin Brown, a grand daughter, Christal Davis Mills, a great grandson, Wyatt Adam Mills, and a niece, Stacy Doolin.  Our mother is survived by six children and their spouses, Wilma and Cledius Collins of Grayson, KY, Kenny and Johnita Leadingham of Wayne, WV, LInda and Keith Miller of Cannonsburg, KY, Arlene and Ed Smith of Kenove, WV, Teresa and Bob Mills of Flatwoods, KY, and Terry and Tonya Leadingham of Boyd County, KY.    She is also survived by 12 grand children and their families, Rebecca and Matt of Pedro, OH, Stacy Handley and Neil of Willard, KY, Bobby Leadingham of Ashland, KY, Brian and Sara Miller of Ashland, KY, April and Ernie Thompson of South Shore, KY, Jamie Miller amd Mallorie of Pedro, OH, Kayla Davis and Chris of Bellefonte, KY, Trista and Nick Deweese of Raceland, KY, Branden Leadingham and Cassie of Boyd County, KY, Michelle Williams of Olive Hill, KY, Chris Collins and Regina of Grayson, KY, and Justin Hutchinson of Cannonsburg, KY.  There are also 27 great grandchildren.  Our Mother is also survived by 2 sisters, Judy (Gary) Sallie of Summitt, KY, and Brenda Yonts of Summitt, KY.  Six brothers, Elwood and Rita Doolin of Westwood, KY, Glen Doolin of Wurtland, KY, Charles and Pat Doolin of Arizona, Ellis and Pam Doolin, Jr. ofCatlettsburg, KY, Donald and Donna Doolin of Ona, WV, and David Doolin of Sandy Springs, SC.  Several neices and nephews and a special grand dog, Pete.  Mom had a passion for life, was a child of our Lord and Savior and loved spending time with her children, grand children, and great grand children.  She was a member of the Church of Christ, Olive Hill, KY.  Serving as pallbearere are Bobby Joe Leadingham, Brial Miller, Bob Mills, Taylor Watts, Jacob Leadingham, Nick Deweese.  Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by pastor John Brown.  Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until service time Saturday.  Burial will be in the Dixon Cemetery. Lt. Colonel, Shelburn Ray Childers

Ret. Lieutenant Colonel Shelburn Ray Childers, 69, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Brenda Lemaster Childers, died peacefully, Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Kings Daughters Medical Center with his loving family at his bedside.  Shelburn was born February 11, 1944 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky a son of the late Percy Raymond and Willa Belle Stewart Childers.  Lt. Col. Childers was a 1962 graduate of Catlettsburg High School and a 1966 graduate of the University of Kentucky, and graduated from the Air Force Training School in 1967.  Shelburn Ray was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of devoted service.  He performed duties as Commander of Tactical Control Units deploying to various contingencies in countries throughout the world.  Following his retirement, he served as executive director of Bethany House, Cabell-Wayne Family Resource Network and facilities manager for the Jockey Club in Lexington, Kentucky.  In addition to his parents, Shelburn was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight David Childers.  Surviving include his dear wife of 44 years, Brenda Carol Lemaster Childers. A son, Dwight Christopher "Chris" Childers of Lexington, Kentucky, a daughter, Melissa Gail "Missy" Childers of Lexington, Kentucky, and 2 grandchildren, Sierra and husband Travis Dawson of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Spencer Childers of Lexington, Kentucky.

Linda Louise Love Allen, 67, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Billy Joe Allen, died Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Kings Daughters Medical Center following a short illness.  Linda was born July 10, 1946 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late William Love and the late Harold and Dorothy Patrick Howard, Sr.  Linda was a retired Highly Skilled Educator receiving her bachelor's degree from Morehead State University and her master's degree from the University of Alabama. She was a former State Board of Education employee and has worked in the Boyd, Greenup,  and Fairview School Districts.  Surviving in addition to her loving husband include a daughter, Cathy Lynn and husband Steven Groves of Ashland, Kentucky. Stephanie Stevens, and daughter Kylie Brooke Stevens, wife and daughter of Michael Stevens, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Monday night as the result of an automobile accident.  Stephanie was born April 21, 1982  at Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of Steve and Shari Chatfield Wells of Ashland, Kentucky. She is survived, in addition to her husband, by a step son Bryce Stevens of South Point, Oh.  her mother and father, a brother Jeremy Wells of Biloxi, Mississippi, and a sister, Mandy King of Nicholasville, KY.  Kylie is survived by her father, maternal grandparents. Paternal grandmother, Joyce Stevens of South Point, Ohio, and a brother Bryce. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Stevens in November.  Kylie attended Mrs. Potter's Kindergarten class at Summitt Elementary School.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Russell, Kentucky, where Stephanie and Kylie attended.   Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.  Visitation will be Friday after 5:00 PM at the church. Delmas Tyler Preston, 33, of Westwood, died Friday morning at his residence following a short illness.  Tyler was born October 9, 1980 in Ashland, KY, a son of Jeff Preston of Westwood, Kentucky and Tammy Jo Brown Fannin of Virginia.  

Tyler was a funeral director and the Vice President of Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, Kentucky.  He was a 1999 graduate of Fairview High School and a 2003 graduate of DeVry University.  Tyler dearly loved his family and enjoyed working in the family business with his Dad.  He was also a talented musician and loved to entertain.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Delmas Jay Preston, Jr. and Nieda Preston McCallister and by maternal grandparents, George Brown and Josephine Brown.

Tyler is also survived paternally by two uncles, Jack Preston of Tampa, FL and Jon Preston and wife Sonya of Equitorial Guinea. Africa, and cousins, LaShea and husband Branden Hutchinson of Westwood, KY, and Sharay and husband Adam Stoner of Lawrenceburg, KY, and a precious second cousin, Silas Hutchinson.  He is survived maternally by uncles and aunts Roy and Kathy Whitt, Colin and Jill Whitt, and Joy and Don Stapleton.  In addition, by cousins Josh Whitt, Amanda Conley, Shane Whitt, Tara Venditti, Judy Stapleton, Roni Quillen and Ricky Lee Stapleton.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at noon at the Fairview Baptist Church by Brother Mike Rice and Brother Justin Boyd.Burial will be in the heart of the community he loved so much, Westwood, Kentucky, in Dixon Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening at 5:00 PM at Fairview Baptist Church.

Rosemary Farthing

Rosemary Farthing, 84, of Route 5, Ashland, died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  Rosemary was born April 11, 1929 at Beckley, West Virginia a daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Underwood Farthing.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a daughter, Leondas Ruth Miller, 2 brothers, Virgil and Woodrow Farthing, and 2 sisters, Jeanette Hendrickson and Quindora Childers.  Surviving include 3 sons, Harry Miller, Walt Miller, and Dennis Miller, and wife B'Gail, all of Ashland, Kentucky. A daughter, Gail Miller of Ashland, Kentucky. 2 sisters, Helen Lilly of Goldsboro, North Carolina and Winnie Deck (Gene) of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, and a brother William Farthing (Pinky)of Ocala, Florida. 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Lucille Maureen Layne Craft departed this life while under the care of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland, Kentucky on 14 Jan 2014.  She was born 10 Aug 1921 at Harold, Kentucky to the late James Blaine and Ollie Hall Layne.  She is the gg granddaughter of James Shannon Layne who is one of the early pioneers of Floyd County. Lucille is a member of Temple Baptist Church.  Over the years she has been active in her church both at Temple and other churches as Sunday school teacher and pianist with a special emphasis on missions.  She was a homemaker all of her adult life.  During World War II she served with Rosie’s Riveters in Willow Run, Michigan at the Willow Run Bomber Plant.  During her married life she and her husband, James Pard Craft, Sr. lived in Floyd County, Kentucky and Michigan.  The last few years they resided in the Ashland, Kentucky area where her husband worked for CSX.She is preceded in death by six siblings:  Irene Elkins, Harold, KY; Arthur Langdon Layne, Harold, KY; Lenna “Lynn” Byrd Hubbard, Patriot, OH; Ottis Langley Layne, Sr., Catlettsburg, KY; Mary Ozetta Lee, Harold, KY; Anna Sue Clarke, Harold, KY.  She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Sue Mattingly (Tom) of Lexington, KY; one son, James Pard Craft, Jr., and one granddaughter, Aries Craft, both of Flatwoods, KY.Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm followed by the funeral service at Temple Baptist Church, 124 Reid Street, Flatwoods, KY on Thursday, January 16.  A graveside service will be held at the family cemetery at Harold, KY, on Friday, January 17 at 11:30 AM.  Services will be under the auspices of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 3526 State Route 5, Ashland, KY 41102. Contributions may be made in her memory to Temple Baptist Church, 124 Reid Street, Flatwoods, KY 41139, designated for the Church’s mission fund or for the Church’s Gideons fund.

 Shirley Daniels Cordle Stapleton, 91, of Westwood, Ashland, KY went to be with the Lord January 14, 2014. She was a homemaker and a 65 year member of Westwood United Baptist Church. She was born May 11, 1922 in Chandlersville, KY, a daughter of late Francis Elcanah and Carrie Ramey Daniels. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Douglas (C.D.) Cordle and her second husband Cecil Stapleton.  She was also preceded in death by 6 brothers, 5 sisters, and one grandson. Leonard Ray Daniels, James Bascom Daniels, Letha Ralph Daniels, Rev. Landon Taylor (LT) Daniels, Harold Lee Daniels, Earl Junior Daniels, Hazel Green Berube, Nancy Mildred McKenzie, Fannie Imo (Jean) Johnson, Bernice Phillips, Erlene Daniels and grandson Timothy Lee Cordle.  Shirley is survived by one sister, Phyllis Howard of Ashland, KY. Other survivors include three sons, Darrell (Betty) Cordle of Avondale, AZ, Darvin (Betty) Cordle of Westwood, KY, Reid Cordle of Oil Springs, KY, two daughters, Sharon Hall of Lexington, KY and Nancy (Jim) Isham of Westwood, KY,  one stepdaughter Doris (Jack) Francis of Catlettsburg, KY. She is survived by 9 grandchildren, John Douglas Hall, Roger Dale (Kelli) Cordle, Bronson Douglas (Tonya) Cordle, Robert Jason Hall, Tommy Lee Cordle, Travis Dean Cordle, Shelley Leigh (Donnie) Greer, Carrie Francis (Randy) Satterly and Jaclyn Michelle Wheatley.  Two step-grandsons Jack (Lisa) Francis Jr.,  James (Sandra) Francis, and one step granddaughter Jeannie Francis .  11 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law Ruby Daniels of Ashland, KY and Delores Miller of Willow Run, MI. Shirley  is also survived by a lifelong and dear friend Hobart Lemaster, close neighbors Lily Porter and George and Janie Kazee, and a host of family friends that will miss her greatly.

Kitty Christine Cremeans Coffee, 73, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Ronald Coffee, passed away Wednesday morning, January 8, 2014 following a sudden illness.  Kitty was born March 29, 1940 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Alec and Opal Conley Cremeans.  Mamaw Kitty was of the Freewill Baptist Faith and faithfully attended the 2nd Freewill Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by 3 sisters, Nora Bluebaum, Dorothy Thompson, and Thelma Forbes.  Surviving, in addition to her loving husband of 55 years, include a son, James Ronald Coffee and wife Nita of Naples, Kentucky.  2 daughters, Dana Christine Hennecke and husband Randy of Naples, Kentucky, and Nancy Gail Smith and husband Jeffrey of Ashland, Kentucky. 5 grandchildren that she loved dearly, Phillip Coffee, Natalie Fultz, Matthew Fultz, Bridget Coffee, and Jacob Smith.  A step grand daughter, Jessica Salyers, 2 brothers, Eugene Cremeans of Ashland, Kentucky and Virgil Cremeans of Versailles, Kentucky, and 2 sisters, Eva Erwin and Judy Westley, both of Ashland, Kentucky, and several special nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be Friday, January 10 , 2014 at  11:00 AM at the Preston Family Funeral Home by Pastor Randy Scaggs. Interment will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Dovie Darnell, 91, of Bellefonte, Kentucky, died peacefully Sunday evening, December 29, 2013, with her daughters at her bedside, at Saint Joseph Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky.  Dovie was born August 24, 1922 a daughter of the late Icey McFarland and granddaughter of the late John and Minerva McFarland.  She was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and grandparents by a son, Brady Lee Darnell.  She will be honored by her grandsons and great grandsons serving as pall bearers.  Surviving are 3 daughters, Ethel Johnson and husband William of Haver Hill, Ohio, Catherine Sadler and husband Ron of Ashland, Kentucky, and Beverly Wellman and husband Carl E. of Ashland, Kentucky.  A brother, Ellis Wicker of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, 2 sisters, Geneva Cooper of Columbus, Ohio, and Juanita Bell of Saga Nova, Florida.  7 grand children, 17 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be Friday, January 3, 2014 at 1:00 PM by pastor Dennis Hankins at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Entombment will be in the Edgewood Abbey Chapel Mausoleum at the Memorial Burial Park, Wheelersburg, Ohio.  Visitation will be Thursday evening, at the funeral home, from 6 - 9 PM and Friday from 11:00 AM until service time.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

 Curtis Martin, 66, of Ashland, KY, husband of Freda Hogsten Martin, died Sunday morning at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.  Curt was born November 9, 1947 at Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Junious and Mary Nelson Martin.  He was a member of the Moore Street Tabernacle, a Vietnam Veteran, a retired 43 year crane operator from Armco/AK steel corporation, piano tuner, and Gospel Music singer and musician.  Curt is survived by his wife of 42 years, Freda, a daughter, Melissa Darlene, and 4 loving grandchildren, Austin, Riley, Ryan, and Jayden.  Funeral services will be Friday, December 27, 2013 at 1:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Dan Pancake.  Burial will be in the Martin Family Cemetery. James R. Jenkins, 83, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Wednesday morning, December 11, 2013 at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  James was born April 7, 1930 at Denton, Kentucky a son of the late Sam and Bertha Kitchen Jenkins.  He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service as a medic serving in both Korea and Viet Nam.  James was also formerly employed with the U.S. Veterans Administration and Kentucky Electric Steel. Surviving include his precious wife of 62 years, Jean Adkins Jenkins.  2 sons, Robert Jenkins and wife Miriam of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Terry Jenkins and wife Freda of Russell, Kentucky.  A daughter, Suzanne and husband Gary Simpson of Louisville, Kentucky. Ray Lockhart, 76, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Ashland, died Saturday morning, December 7, 2013 at his residence.  Ray was born March 7, 1937 at Boyd County, Kentucky a son of the late Geneva Massingill Lockhart.  He was a member of the South Ashland United Methodist Church, a retired pipefitter with AK Steel and a member of Fred Gross Lodge #953 F&AM. Ray was an avid UK fan and enjoyed time with his family and grandchildren.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his mother, by several brothers and sisters.  He is survived by his loving wife, Lovonda McClain Lockhart.  2 sons, Doran Lockhart and wife Kim of Cedar Hill, Tennessee and Todd Lockhart and wife Daryl of Lexington, Kentucky.  Ray is also survived by 5 precious grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine, Evan, Kelsey, and Tori.  Funeral Services will be Friday, December 13, 2013 at 1:00 PM by Pastor Mike Rice at Preston Family Funeral Home.  Entombment will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum with  Masonic Rites by the officers and brothers of Fred Gross Lodge #953 F&AM. Willis D. Fowler

1940 - 2013

 

Willis D. Fowler, 73, of Boyd County, passed away after an extended illness Thursday morning in Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg, Virginia.  He was born on September 15th, 1940 to the late Julia and Edward Fowler of Boyd County.  He was a 54 year member of the Local 248 plumbers and pipefitters retiring in December 1994.  During his 35 year career as a pipefitter and welder he worked on projects in the mid west as well as Eastern Kentucky. He also enjoyed seeing the country while hauling steel and other goods in his Diamond Rio semi.  During his career as a parent, he fixed everything from Barbie dolls to broken hearts and chased the boogey-man far away.  He was a member of Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church for many years and enjoyed serving the church community by volunteering his time.   He had a life long love of Diet Coke, Peanut Butter on Vanilla Wafers, Vienna Sausages and fried Bologna.  He enjoyed watching his U.K. Wildcats play basketball but only when the refereeing “was fair.” He appreciated the smell of a new car, the taste of filet mignon, cutting grass on his riding lawnmower and visiting his daughter and grandchildren in Virginia.  He had a special affection for her dog “Peanut” whose life he once saved. 

Willy was preceded in death by his brothers, O.C, Sherman, and Burt and sisters, Charlene, Ann, Maxine, Mary Lou and Jean. 

He is survived by his daughter, Leisa Fowler-Sheridan, son-in-law Patrick, and two grandchildren, Julian and Madeline; a brother, J.C. and two sisters, Jo Blair and Donna Ellenberg.

Bobby Gene Watts, 81, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of 61 years of Ruth Jean McDowell Watts, died peacefully, Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Kings Daughters Medical Center.  Bobby was born May 6, 1932 at Holden, West Virginia, a son of the late Doc Ellis Watts and the late Fanny Lee Frye Watts.  He was a member of the 13th Street Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from Allied AK Coke Plant after 41 years of service.  Bobby was a member and Past Master of Rush Lodge #715 F&AM and Apperson Chapter York Rite Bodies. Bobby was also past Worthy Matron of Rush 546 Order of Eastern Star. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a son, David Leslie Watts and a granddaughter, Sherri Ray. Betty Hughes, 84, of Westwood, died Friday morning at Oakmont Manor Health Care Facility following an extended illness.  She was born January 29, 1929 at Lawrence County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Edgel and Mirandy Preston Rowe and was a member of the Westwood United Baptist Church.  Betty was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, James Henry Hughes, 2 sons, James Michael and Gary Hughes, son-in-law Larry Carroll, and a grandson, Aaron Hatfield. She is survived by 2 daughters, Sandra Carroll of Flatwoods, Kentucky, and Judith G.  Hatfield and husband Rodney of Flatwoods, Kentucky.  3 brothers, Arby Rowe and wife Lilly of Greenup, KY, Dave Rowe (deceased wife Barbara) of Westwood, KY, and Paul Rowe and wife Cinda of Ironville, KY.  A sister, Helen Imogene Wright and husband Fred of Catlettsburg, KY, 3 grandchildren, Brigette and husband Danny Devaney, Michael Hughes, Gary and wife Breanna Hatfield, and 2 great grandchildren, Isaiah Stills and Airen Hatfield, and a great friend, she considered as her daughter, Marie Hatfield. Betty was also privileged to have been cared for by the staff of Oakmont Manor, she considered all of them her family.  Funeral Services will be Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Preston Family Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 AM until service time.

John Landon Bradley, Jr., 39, of Ashland, Kentucky, died October 23, 2013 at Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.  John was born November 13, 1973 at Ironton, Ohio a son of the late Linda Kaye Gullett Bradley and John L. Azie Meade

Azie Meade, 93, of Russell Kentucky, passed away November 12th at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky.  Azie was born June 4, 1920 in Martin, Kentucky to Flora Stumbo Meade and James Lonnie Meade. He was an U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific, and was involved in three major engagements at New Guinea, South Philippines, and Luzon.  Azie was awarded the Bronze Star and honorably discharge in 1945. He retired from 

the Hotstrip Mill at ARMCO in 1982. In addition to his parents, Azie was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Anna Lee Fyffe Meade; sisters: Dorothy Meade Holbrook, Belle Meade Howard; brothers: Astor Meade, James Lonnie Meade Jr. , daughter-in-law: Carrie Jean White Meade; and great-grandchildren: Tanner Drake Leight and Taylor Michael Leight. Azie is survived by his children, William Drake Meade and wife Carolyn of Grovetown Georgia; Kathy Meade Frasure and husband Malcolm of Russell, Kentucky; Deborah Meade Jones and husband John of Russell, Kentucky; and Brian Azie Meade and wife Joanie of Trenton, Ohio.  

Azie was known as "Papaw" to his seven grandchildren: Michael Scott Frasure and wife Allison, Jeffery Lewis Frasure and wife Amy, Angela Meade Bamburg and husband Cody, Megan Meade Leight and husband Brent, Lisa Ann Meade, Autumn Michele Meade, and Jeremy Brett Jones. Joann Gardner Richardson, 82, of Ashland, died peacefully Sunday morning, November 3, at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility following an extended illness. Joann was born July 27, 1931 at Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Herschel and Hazel Wells Gardner.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer D. Richardson in 2000.  Joann is survived by 4 sons, Elmer David Richardson, Jr. and wife Kathy of Tampa. Florida.  Raymond Richardson and wife Kim of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Emmett Huff, Jr.

1926 - 2013

 

Emmett Huff, Jr., 87, of Route 5, Ashland, died peacefully Sunday evening, October 27, 2013 at Kingsbrook Life Care Center, with his family at his bedside, following an extended illness.  Emmett, or 'June' as he was known to many, was born May 24, 1926 in Boyd County, KY, a son of the late Emmett and Mary Bowling Huff, Sr.  June was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his precious wife Inas Hart Huff, whom he shared many happy and blessed years together, a brother; James Edward Huff, and a sister; Rosida Huff Greene. He was a retired millwright with Local 1519 and was of the Baptist faith.  He was considered, by his grandchildren, the greatest Papa in the world, and enjoyed fishing with them at Grayson Lake. He also enjoyed farming and raising goats. Surviving include a son and daughter in law, David and Linda Huff of Route 5, Ashland, KY.  3 grandchildren, Julia Huff Smith and husband Bob, Mark David Huff and wife Anita, and Gary Lee Huff and wife Lisa, and 2 precious great grandchildren, Dharla Marie and Elijah Lee Huff.

At his request, a private service was held Thursday, October 31,  2013 at Rose Hill Burial Park.  Arrangements have been under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

 

 

 

 

Edward Fairchild Sr. – 1922-2013

 

Edward Fairchild Sr., 90 of Westwood, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday October 27, 2013 at his home following a short illness. He was born November 28, 1922, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Andrew Collie Fairchild and Hattie Mullins Fairchild. He was married 63 years to his loving wife Sena Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Fairchild, who went to Heaven on October 2, 2006.

He was a devoted Christian and faithfully evangelized the Gospel of Jesus Christ in area churches and held several tent revivals. He proudly served his country and received an “Honorable Discharge” from the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Wesson, Destroyer Escort, during the “Asiatic Campaigns” of World War ll.

He is survived by two daughters, Betty R. (Paul) Price of Xenia, Ohio, Shirley A.(Howard) Peel of Flatwoods, Ky. And one son, Edward.

Grandchildren: Paula(Greg) Norrod, Angi (Ed) Quinlan, Chris (Erin) Peel, Tracy (Brandon) Lange,Clinton Edward Fairchild, Jessica (Matt)Gibson, Franklin Alexander Fairchild . Great- grand children :Gabrielle Norrod, Kiersten, Elena, Ryan, and Dana Quinlan, Kendall Lange, Josiah Fairchild, Desiree Gibson, Trevor (Susie)Fawbush. Two Great-Great grandchildren Aiden and Adam Fawbush.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday,October 30, 2013, at the Preston Family Funeral Home, 3526 Ky. Rt. #5, Ashland, by Rev. Edward Fairchild Jr.. Interment will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 9:00pm at the funeral home.

 

 

 

 

 

William Alvin "Bill" Whitlock

Bill Whitlock, 65, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Theresa Adams Whitlock, died Saturday afternoon at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.  Bill was born September 26, 1948 in Ashland, Kentucky a son of Frances Barnhill Whitlock, of Ashland, KY,  and the late James H. Whitlock.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving 2 tours of duty during the Viet Nam War in Antarctica at McMurdo Station and Hallett Station.  Bill was a member of Heritage Freewill Baptist Church, retired from Marathon Petroleum as a millwright. Bill and Theresa were the owners of Whitlock Photography, a lifelong passion they shared together. Surviving, in addition to his loving wife, include a son, Jason Hammond, and fiancé Ashley Holder, of Lexington, Kentucky.  A daughter, Natalie Whitlock Stephenson, and husband Damon, of St. Augustine, Florida.  A grandson, Isaak Stephenson. 2 brothers, Marvin and wife Lydia of Cannonsburg, Kentucky and David and wife Judy of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.   Bill's life was his family and nothing meant more to him on this earth than the precious times they spent together.  Brother Ed Cook will officiate the funeral service at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Noon.  Interment will be in the Cribbs Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be this evening (Monday) from 6 - 9 PM.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Alice Karen Bates, 62, of Ironton, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, died peacefully Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at her residence.  Alice was born March 20, 1951 at Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Isadore and Nellie Morgan Bates. She was a U.S. Navy  veteran, a former Currier with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and a member of the Greenup VFW.  Alice was preceded in death, in addition to her parents by a brother, Steve Bates. Surviving include a daughter, Lisa Mooney and husband Jason of Ironton, Ohio.  2 grandchildren that the sun rose and sat on, Karsyn Cheyenne Bates and Andrew Jason Mooney, both of Ironton, Ohio.  A sister, Patty Hartman of Flatwoods, Kentucky. 6 brothers, Bill Deering of Texas, Michael Bates and wife Carol of Flatwoods, KY, Paul Bates and wife Treva of Danleyton, KY, Jerry Bates and wife Jodi of Flatwoods, Mark Bates and wife Johnda of Greenup, KY, Jimbo Bates and wife Arthie of Wurtland, KY. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held Monday, October 14, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at the 1st Assembly of God at Raceland, Kentucky by bro. Richard Lewis Adams, 84, of Ashland, Kentucky, died Sunday afternoon at Pleasant Hill Rehabilitation Center in Piketon, Ohio, surrounded by his loving wife and children.  Richard was born April 4, 1929 at Ashland, Kentucky a son of the late Richard and Mamie Fosson Adams. He attended Rose Road Chapel, was retired from the T&L Department at AK Steel, was an ordained minister in the Wesleyan and Holiness Association, enjoyed assisting in the building of local church and was a master gardener.  Surviving include his loving wife, Rosemary Rogers Adams, and 3 sons, Roger and wife Anna Adams of Florida, Ralph and wife Vickie of Flatwoods, KY, and Rex and wife LeAnn of Cannonsburg, KY. James was born April 1, 1927 in Greenup County, Kentucky, a son of the late Granville Salyer and Dona Owens Neace. He was retired from AK Steel Corporation and was a member of the Ironton Elks Lodge BPOE #177, Ironton Moose Lodge, Ashland Eagles, Daniel Boone Aerie #2329, and VFW Post 8850. James was also preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, Edna Stambaugh Salyer, a brother, Dewey Salyer, a sister, Ann LeMaster, and 2 nephews, Larry and Dewey LeMaster. Surviving include 2 neices, Glenna Dillow of Lakeland, Florida and Velva Hall of Winchester, Kentucky, and a nephew, Rodney LeMaster of Flatwoods, KY.

Hazel Crum, 86, of Ironville, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, with her loving family at her side, following an extended illness.  Hazel was born March 25, 1927 at Carter County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Milford and Gypsy Ogden Cleavenger.  Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Crum in 2005, a daughter Pamela Carol Sipps in 2010, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.  She was a member of the Russell Christian Baptist Church and attended Hilltop Baptist Church. Vickie Lynn Suttles, 61, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Ashland, died Sunday in Lexington at St. Joseph's Hospital.  Vickie was born January 22, 1952 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Mitchell and Christine Vaughn Scarberry.  Vickie was a former clerk with Dillards in Lexington and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a son, Kenneth Allen Suttles, and a grand daughter Tiarra Nichole Phillips.  Surviving include a son, Everett Suttles of Ashland, Kentucky.  A daughter, Lisa Queen of Lexington, Kentucky, 4 sisters, Carol Martin, Connie Tackett, Donna Dunham, all of Ashland, and Nancy Jarvis of Columbus, Ohio.  5 grandchildren, Brandon Fowler, Bradley Queen, Trevor Queen, Trace Queen, and Kayleigh Litteral.  Funeral Services will be Thursday evening, August 29, 2013, at 8:00 PM at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland, Kentucky, by Minister Mark Keene.  Visitation will be Thursday from 6 PM until service time. Faye Pelfrey Fannin, 89, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Bill Fannin, died peacefully Sunday evening at Kings Daughters Medical Center. Faye was born August 13, 1923 in Olive Hill, Kentucky, daughter of the late Riley F. and Flo Gooden Pelfrey. She was a faithful member of the South Ashland United Methodist Church and was a former employee of the Dairy Cheer in Ashland. Faye was preceded in death by; her parents, her first husband Fred Thompson; two sons, Roger Fred Thompson and Richard L. Thompson; two grand daughters, Leslie Scott and Valori Scott; a half brother, Don Pelfrey and two brothers, Warren and Jack Pelfrey. Surviving in addition to her loving husband Bill are: two daughters, Peggy (husband Richard Scott) of Woodstock, Georgia, and Darla J. Goodall of Barboursville, West Virginia; a half sister, Norma Shackleford of Ohio; three half brothers, Jim Pelfrey of Ohio, Dale Pelfrey and Barry Pelfrey of Florida; nine grand children; seventeen great grand children, and one great great grandson, whom she loved dearly.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Preston Family Funeral Home by Pastor Bill Hammond (brother-in-law) and Pastor Lance Campbell. Betsey Stringer, 72, of Ashland, wife and beloved soul mate of Bobby Joe Stringer, died peacefully Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.  

Betsey was born March 7, 1941, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Emerson and Virginia Layne Hunt.  

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg, where she loved her church family, enjoyed the fellowship of others and was always willing to help in any way with any project the church under went.  

She is also survived by two daughters, Debbie Garred of South Point, Ohio, and Donna Hamilton of Ashland; three stepdaughters, Renée Stringer Cheek of Mandeville, La., Lorna Stringer Gildig of Abita Springs, La., and Janda Stringer Cefalu of Destrehan, La.; a stepson, Robert Dale Stringer of Louisville; her brother, John Layne of Ironton, Ohio; three half-brothers, Phillip Layne, Larry Hunt and Kenny Hunt, all of Columbus, Ohio; her half-sister, Janette Hunt of Columbus; her aunt, Peggy Cook of Coal Grove, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.  

It was her wish to announce her new address is now “heaven,” and her desire was for her family and friends to come be with her.  

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg by Pastor Stan Williams. Interment will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County.

Nieda V. Preston McCallister

1939 - 2013

 Nieda Lee Vickers Preston McCallister, 73, of Westwood, KY, very peacefully joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven Thursday evening, May 30, 2013.  She was born on Oct. 7, 1939 a daughter to the late Howard Jackson and Nancy Wells Vickers.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her first husband, Delmas Jay Preston, Jr., sisters Jacqueline Kay Vickers and Patricia Vickers Kimbler.  Nieda is survived by her husband, Ray 'Spot' McCallister, three sons - Jeff Preston of Westwood, Jack Preston of Tampa, FL and Jon Preston and wife Sonya of Westwood, and currently residing in Equitorial Guinea, Africa.  In addition, she is survived by three grandchildren, Tyler Preston of Westwood, LaShea Hutchinson and husband Branden of Westwood and Sharay Stoner and husband Adam of Lawrenceburg, KY and new precious great grandson Silas Boone Hutchinson.  She is also survived by brothers Larry Vickers (Lajeana) of Elizabethtown, KY and Garry Vickers (Helen) of Lancaster, KY and by sisters Debbie Woolsey (Bill) of Mt. Vernon, IN, Pamela Long (Henry) of Sitka, KY and Teressa Vickers of Zephyrhills, FL and by several nieces and nephews.

Nieda was a 1957 graduate of Paintsville High School and a 1960 graduate of Norton Memorial Infirmary School of Nursing where she was President of her Senior Class.  She was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church, past President of the United Methodist Women Society, past Chairperson of The Circle of Love and member of The Bible Sunday School Class.  She loved her fellowship with the ladies and was always volunteering for many church projects and helping whenever needed.

She was an amazing "Mom" and "Mamaw" and spent her life caring for and helping others.  Nieda was an active registered nurse for nearly 40 years and continued to help others through Community Hospice,  delivering for Meals On Wheels, and was always a friendly face at Preston Family Funeral Home.

She loved God and her family more than anything and will be terribly missed.  Her entire family and many dear friends were truly blessed to have her in their lives.

Robert R. Hatfield, 79, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, died Wednesday evening, May 15, 2013 at his residence.  Bob was born December 29, 1933 at Ashland, Kentucky a son of the late Grover and Lillian Thornsbury Hatfield.  He was the former general manager of Machinery Incorporated and was a U.S. Veteran. He is survived by daughter Kathy Berry and her husband Tom, of Ashland, KY. Sister, Peggy Thirion and her husband Tim, of Ashland, KY.

 Mary Etta Tackett Burke, 88, of Westwood, Kentucky, wife of Edgar Burke, died peacefully at her home, with her family at her bedside, Monday afternoon, April 15, 2013.  Mary was born March 27, 1925 at Catlettsburg, Kentucky a daughter of the late Alonzo and Eldora Walker Tackett.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by 2 sisters, Ethel Burke, Janice Rhymes, and 4 brothers, Earl, Jesse, William, and Bobby Lee Tackett. Mary attended the Little Jewell Old Regular Baptist Church and was retired from the Piece Good Shop. Surviving in addition to her husband of 66 years include 3 sons, Michael Burke and wife Joan of Ashland, Kentucky, Joseph Burke and wife Dottie of Ashland, Kentucky, and John Burke and wife Debbie of Worthington, Kentucky.  2 daughters, Patricia and husband Wendell Burchett of Raceland, Kentucky, and Deborah and husband Randy Biggs of Ashland, Kentucky.  2 sisters, Jackie Brewer of Greenup, Kentucky, and Barbara Broughton of Westwood, Kentucky.  11 grandchildren, Wendy Tolliver, Scott Burchett, Michael Burke, Brent Burke, Heather Kersey, Jody Burke-Kaiser, Bryan Burke, Jennifer Foster, Kathy Caudill, Shane Burke, and Randi Wheeler.  She is also survived by 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mary will be Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Preston Family Funeral Home by Elder Terry Bryant and Elder Junior Ruggles.  Burial will be in the Kirby Flats Cemetery. Mary Margaret Stevens

1930 - 2013

Mary Margaret Stevens, 82, of Westwood, Kentucky, died Sunday morning, April 14, 2013 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland with her precious family at her bedside.  Mary was born April 26, 1930 at Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of the late Claire and Virgie Shelton Johnson.  She was a homemaker and attended Ironville Independent Baptist Church.  Mary was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by two of her babies, Gary and Marlene, and a brother, James Johnson.  She is survived by 3 daughters, Sharon and husband Rick Hall of Wurtland, Kentucky, Margaret and husband Roy White of Ashland, Kentucky, Kathy and husband Obby James of Raceland, Kentucky. 6 grandchildren, Melissa, Richard, Steve, Carla, Becky and David. 13 great grandchildren, Eric, Lacy, Taylor, Christopher, Jacob, Brendon, Lauren, Justin, Jessica, Alison, Mason, Maleesa and Keeston.  3 great great grandchildren, Carson, Kyla, Bryce, and special neighbors, Bill and Penny Clark.  Funeral services will be this evening (Tuesday) at 8:00 PM by Pastor Jim Webster and Brother Gary Salyers at Preston Family Funeral Home. Rebekah Stevens McDavid

1985 - 2013

 Rebekah Leah 'Bekah' Stevens McDavid, 27, of Westwood, Kentucky, wife of Adam Craig McDavid, died Friday morning, April 12, 2013 at Kings Daughters Medical Center following a sudden illness.  Bekah was born June 3, 1985 in Huntington, West Virginia, a daughter of Perry and Myra Franklin Stevens of Westwood, Kentucky.  She was a 2003 graduate of Fairview High School and attended Western Kentucky University.  Bekah was employed with Fifth 3rd Bank and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.  Her life was a ministry to the Lord and she lived to be a Christian example to the young children in her path.  Bekah is survived, in addition to her loving husband and parents, by a brother, Drew Stevens of Westwood, KY, her maternal grandparents, Henry and Mildred Franklin of Ashland, Kentucky, a very special friend, Sydney Ekers, and her mother and father in law,  Cris and Ron McDavid, and sister in law, Kayla McDavid of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.  Funeral Services will be Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 1:00 PM by Pastor Mike Rice at Fairview Baptist Church, Main Street, Westwood, Kentucky.  Interment will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, Kentucky.  Visitation is this evening (Tuesday, April 16, 2013) anytime after 5:00 PM at the church.  Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.prestonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Robert Pierce Mullen, 83, of Greenup, Kentucky, formerly of Huntington, West Virginia, died April 9, 2013 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky with his loving family at his bedside following an extended illness.  Robert was born July 30, 1929 in Huntington, West Virginia a son of the late Willard Hurtley and Gracie McComas Mullen, Sr.  Bob was a retired operator with Owens Illinois Corporation.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a daughter, Barbara Sue Mullen in 2000,  2 grandchildren, Heather Dawn and Jonathan, step father Pappy Shade Gibson, brothers Willard, Leonard, Richard and sisters Freda, Dorothy, Flossie, Jenny, Sheila, Pearline, Betty Jane, Boots, and Pat.

Surviving include a son, Larry Robert Mullen of Washington, 3 daughters Kathy Statley of Jacksonville, Florida. Dianna and husband Mark Woods of Gallipolis Ferry, Ohio. Karen and husband Carl Howard of Greenup, Kentucky. A brother Jerry Gibson and wife Jean of South Point, Ohio. 9 grandchildren, Jennifer, Shawn, Matthew, Joshua, Teriea, Courtney, Robert, Christopher and David. 5 great grandchildren, Micayla, Evan, Alison, Evan, and Isabelle.

Poe Jeffrey Williams, Jr.

1945 - 2013

Poe Jeffrey Williams, Jr., 67, of Ashland, Kentucky, husband of Ann Hall Williams, went to heaven Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Kings Daughters Medical Center following a 13 year battle with kidney cancer.  Jeffrey was born April 24, 1945 a son of Beryle Williams of Ashland, Kentucky and the late Poe Jeffrey Williams, Sr. Jeff was retired after 37 years of service with AK Steel Corporation, served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army, was a 1963 graduate of Paul Blazer High School, and was a faithful member of the Meade Station Church of God. Jeff enjoyed spending time with family and church friends and was especially fond of a good round of golf.  He was preceded in death in addition to his father by a daughter, Melissa Dawn Williams.  Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 48 years, Ann Hall Williams, and his mother, Beryle Williams, include 2 daughters, Heather Lee Bennett and husband Jason of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Holly Lynn Williams of Dayton, Ohio. 3 grandchildren, Holly Elizabeth Porter, Dakota Bennett, and Willow Rose Bennett.   3 brothers, Randy Williams and wife Sue of Ashland, Kentucky, Charles Williams and wife Paula of Huntington, West Virginia, and Thomas Williams of Lexington, Kentucky.  3 sisters, Vicki and husband Terry Hessler of Kettering, Ohio, Debbie and husband Jim Ketron of Denver, Colorado, and Dove Crum of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Noon at the Meade Station Church of God by Pastor Rob Jordan.  Entombment will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Wilson Frasher, 94, of Westwood, Kentucky, died Wednesday morning, March 13, 2013,  at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky following an extended illness.  Wilson was born November 17, 1918 at Wayne County, West Virginia a son of the late John and Bessie Tabitha Dyer Frasher.  He was a retired welder  from the United Mine Workers Association and former owner and operator of Frasher Pump and Engineering.  He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, Ruby Walsh Frasher, a sister, Delpha Lee Dameron, and a brother, Elmer Frazier.  Surviving include a son, Larry Frasher and wife Brenda of Bellefonte, Kentucky, and a daughter, Sue Ann Fitch of Westwood, Kentucky.  3 grandchildren, Fred Fitch IV, Larri D. Terrell, and John D. Frasher. 6 great grandchildren, Dustyn, Erin, and Julia Terrell, Aleah Grace Fitch, Haley Frasher, and Damion Wilson.  Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 12:00 PM at PRESTON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME by Brother Burt Scott and Rev. Betty Irene Conley Grubb, 79, of Cannonsburg, wife of Samuel M. Grubb, died

Saturday morning, March 2, 2013 at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an

extended illness.  Betty was born April 24, 1933 in Johnson County, Kentucky a

daughter of the late Harrison and Flossie Whitt Conley.  She was retired from

GTE/Verizon and attended Mavity Freewill Baptist Church.  Betty was preceded in

death, in addition to her parents, by a brother, Harry H. Conley, and a sister,

Mable Hamilton.  Surviving in addition to her loving husband Sam include a son,

Keith Grubb and wife Melissa of Cannonsburg, KY., 2 grandchildren which she

adored, Andrew Keith Grubb and Emily Renee Grubb.  3 sisters, Melba White of

Ashland, KY, Caretta Gouge (Bill) of Cape Coral, Florida, and Phyllis Braden

(Bob) of Ashland, KY.  At Betty's request a graveside service will be Tuesday,

March 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens by Pastor Mike Gullett. 

There will be no visitation.  Arrangements are under the direction of PRESTON

Opal Cole Kretzer

Opal Cole Kretzer, 86, of Westwood, KY, passed away Friday morning at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.  She was born June 13, 1926 at Bluefield, Indiana, a daughter of the late Floyd and Mamie Boone Cole.  Opal was a homemaker and was a member of the Oak Springs United Baptist Church.  She was quite the seamstress and enjoyed making draperies and coverings.  She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents,  by her husband, James Kretzer in 1995, two brothers, Wayne and Edward Cole and two sisters, Margaret Brewer and Shirley Main.  Opal is survived by 3 loving daughters, Sharon J. Pristas and husband Phil of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sheila M. Rhodes and husband Bill of Westwood, Kentucky, and Amanda Jervis and husband John of Westwood, Kentucky.  7 grandchildren, Phillip Pristas, Kim Knight, James Pristas, Brandon Rhodes, Will Jervis, Shon Jervis, and George Jervis.  6 great grandchildren, Brook, Katlynn, Samantha, Hannah, Hailee, and Alex.  Funeral services will be Monday, March 4, 2013 at Noon at Preston Family Funeral Home by Bro. Dale Barber and Bro.
